THE CARE OF KILN FORMED GLASS

DURABLE, YET FRAGILE

First and foremost, kiln formed glass is...well...glass.

That means that it is indeed quite breakable. That also means that, with minimal care, it can last many lifetimes without any loss of color or brilliance. Think of glass work that you have seen in museums that, after thousands of years, is still strikingly beautiful.

Avoid abrupt temperature changes. The glass used by Marlow Glass Arts is designed for fusing and bending. It is not tempered, and so cannot withstand abrupt changes in temperature. Please do not put these pieces in the freezer, oven, or microwave. Take care when transporting your glass, and protect it from abrupt temperature changes as well as breakage.

The platters and dishes of Marlow Glass Arts are food safe. They are 100% glass, and contain no metals or paints. You may use them freely to hold warm, or room temperature food. We recommend that, before putting a dish in contact with extremely hot food, you run it under warm, then hot water to gently increase its temperature, taking care to distribute the heat evenly across the surface.

Washing instructions: We do not recommend that you clean our pieces in a dishwasher. Over time, dishwashing can cause etching, a cloudiness on the surface of the glass that cannot be removed. The extremely hot water used by dishwashers also poses the risk of cracking or breaking the glass due to the abrupt temperature change.

We recommend that you clean your Marlow Glass Arts pieces with warm water, using any mild dish detergent and a soft cloth. If not being used for serving food, the glass can also be cleaned using a commercial glass cleaner and a soft cloth.

We recommend that your display pieces be cleaned with warm soapy water or glass cleaner from time to time to remove the buildup of dust and environmental chemicals. This will help keep your works of art looking their best.

These works are fused, not painted. Once pieces have been heated in a kiln to over 1400°, the glass is permanently fused together. The pieces of glass have fused into a single unit and cannot be taken apart. The colors are an integral part of the glass itself, and so cannot chip, fade, or wear away. There are no adhesives, paints or glues holding the work together (the only exception being plastic elements that might have been glued to a glass piece, such as feet for a coaster or the backing of a picture frame).

Thank you for considering the work of Marlow Glass Arts. Each piece we make is designed and crafted with respect and care. We hope that it finds a cherished place in your home, for many generations to come.
