This photograph was taken just before the plate was put into the kiln for its first firing. It was constructed primarily of frit, or ground colored glass, arranged to create the pattern, and piled high on the kiln shelf. Kiln firing melted all of the small pieces into a flat, solid unit, much like snow melts and then refreezes into a solid block.
